Jody Bergstresser was born, raised and educated in Pennsylvania. Since childhood her parents and teachers nurtured her artistic talents, and she won a Scholastic Gold Key while in high school. In college she studied art and was brought to Washington DC through an internship with the Art-in-Architecture Program of GSA. She has been showing her work nationally and internationally, has completed many private and public commissions, and is a part of many private and public collections. She has also received the Lock Haven University Alumni Achievement Award, has won a few Best of Show’s, some major medals and first place awards, and numerous other awards in local and regional juried art exhibitions.

Jody’s surroundings are her subject matter, whether it is a building in the neighborhood catching a certain ray of light or her parents’ home along the Susquehanna River filling her with warmth and delight. She prefers to sketch her subjects on site. In her studio she stylizes the image using tracing paper on top of her original drawing, then reverses the images to edit and continues working on her subject more objectively. She also incorporates the shapes of nature into her designs; a leaf, a tree branch, the silhouette of a mountain, a cloud or a person. Her design is then transferred to heavy watercolor paper. She works primarily in gouache, an opaque aqueous medium, using brushes to create a flat, smooth, luminous surface. She enjoys stylizing sporting events, still lives and rural scenes, but her passion is with cityscapes and house portraits.
